11th Day (Monday—14 April 2025) Shimanami Kaido Crossing the Inland Sea (2nd Half)

Traditional Japanese breakfast today at 7 a.m., then 26 miles along the Shimanami Kaido Trail to the Imabari bus station. Ride highlights were the views and crossing amazing elevated bridges with separate lanes for bikes, pedestrians, and small motorcycles. We began riding in 50F temperatures, light wind, and bright sunshine. We ended in Imbari as it started to sprinkle. We had a ramen lunch and bussed to Fukuyama, caught the bullet train to Kyoto, than transferred to a local train to Otsu at the south end of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest fresh water lake.

Breakfast. I tried breaking the raw egg over the rice but could not handle it, especially for breakfast.

First Bridge Crossing of the Day. Alex pursuing a small break away group.

The Shimanami Kaido Cycling Route in Japan guides cyclists across six islands and seven bridges in the Seto Inland Sea. The approach to the Kurushima Bridge and the descent includes a paved path up to and down from the bridge deck. The approaches to the other bridges generally follow a serpentine pattern.

Just before spiraling up to the Kurushima Bridge, we stopped a a store catering to cyclists that had also sold fresh fish and shell fish.

The crabs in the tank are inclosed in separate mesh bags.

Nearly empty shopping mall in Imabari. I was exploring while Alex purchased the bus tickets. Oddly, they required cash so he had to find an ATM, so went to a local ramen restaurant for lunch.

Lunch. Good, fast (because we had to catch the bus), and about $7.
